In 1956, he moved to the US to study Psychology at the University of Chicago and gained a BA. He got PhD in Positive Developmental Psychology in 1965. During college, he got an interest in flow.
He wrote a book titled “Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience” which was published in 1990 and has been translated into more than 20 languages.
He was the founder and co-director of the Quality of Life Research Center.

Csikszentmihalyi was awarded the Clifton Strengths Prize in 2009. He received the Széchenyi Prize at a ceremony in Budapest in 2011.[32] He was awarded the Hungarian Order of Merit in 2014.[9] He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of both the National Academy of Education and the Academy of Leisure Sciences.
